I'm not tech - I'm a cook in the jr./sr. high cafeteria - but I originally applied as a clerical substitute in the office to get my foot in the door. When they saw that I'd had years of food service experience, in addition to clerical, they had me meet with the cafeteria supervisor immediately. I was practically hired on the spot (pending my clearances and background checks, of course). I started out as food prep/server, but worked my way up to assistant cook. There has since been an opening in the high school office, which I could have applied for, but it turns out I really enjoy the cafeteria job (and the pay is pretty much the same anyway).
Plus networking is a good idea. A plus for me was that both my daughters had graduated from the school, so I was not unknown to them. It's a small school, so many of the teachers still remember my girls and ask me about them when I see them in the serving line!

Most districts will post jobs on their website, and not anywhere else. They get a lot of applicants for that kind of job and the competition is fierce, for a handful of openings. People tend to stay in those jobs until retirement. A brief check of our local district shows about 40 openings, about half certificated, the rest classified, but all are classroom. Nothing in IT nor in teaching technology.
I imagine the positions are few and the vacancies infrequent.
