I've read thousands of posts, and it's very consistent, people go above and beyond not to mention the names of their field, job/career. I don't mean company name and location or specific tasks & titles, just the most broad description of one's occupation. It's true for CD forums in general and it's also true for this job related sub-forum. So why anonymous people are so conspiratorial about their lines of work?

1) We're not anonymous, we're pseudonymous. This particular nym is one I've used for a long time and wouldn't be too difficult to connect to my real name.

2) I've seen plenty of people mention their field. I'm a software engineer, BTW.

I won't name my company on the forums...but I am sure with some Google searches you would be able to find out what my job is (and who I work for). My name is easily obtainable from this forum and is visible to people really looking for it...

I'm a forensic accountant specializing in financial fraud investigations.

It's simply another level to ensure anonymity. The more information you provide, the easier it is to connect your pseudonym to your real identity.

I am a VP at a college.

Damn. I was way off.

OP. It's the goddamn Internet. Supposed to be somewhat anonymous.

1) Many are here to whine about the economy, their crappy jobs, etc. Some don't have a job/career track and others aren't really proud enough of what they do.

2) Many of us do, but we don't discuss our jobs in every thread.

3) Some people have jobs that are difficult to categorize. Instead of trying to explain what they do, they save us all the trouble.

I'm a toolmaker/machinist BTW. Blue collar folks seem to be rather underrepresented here.

Somewhere around manufacturing. Don't know why, but that was the impression. Satellite campuses maybe?

I may have mentioned satellite campuses, but I don't really remember. If I did, I would have meant places where people learn, rather than fabrication sites. Interesting how things are interpreted.

Here is a recent example from this sub-forum. Actually, mentioning the field would be very pertinent to this particular post, but... For example, if mkpunk would have written something like "I had an office job in a department store" or "I had a janitorial job" or "I had an entry level engineering job" how that would have jeopardized identity of the poster?

Is This The New Normal When It Comes To Hiring

As many of you know, I have been saying I had a job since the beginning of August. yesterday, I found out I was terminated with a pink slip. The notice lists "fired: inability - not qualified" as the reason with no explanation written just that I was "not picking things up" The position I got was for another person getting fired in a similar way. Hired for 40 days and released for "not picking things up." Just a month shy of benefits kicking in.
