The company requires a 30 day notice under the threat that you would never be eligible for rehire, and will not be given a strong reference if you do not. I need the reference and have done an amazing and outstanding job for this company.

What are my options here? Serve out my notice, then try to apply for a new job and hope for the best?
You're obviously working for a bunch of sociopaths. Honestly, if they will give you a bad reference for not giving them a full month's notice (which is absolutely absurd), do you really think they would give you a good reference anyway? Use references from other jobs you've had.

If it were me, I'd interview with other places and tell them that you need to give your present employer 2 weeks' notice. If you don't say that during the interview, you will raise a red flag. On the day that you get an offer somewhere else, quit your job immediately and just take a two week vacation before you start at the new place. I recommend the Florida Keys if you are a beach person or the Pacific Northwest if you are a mountain person. Flights are cheap and you should have some fun in life!

That's what I did with a real biotch that I worked for all of 6 months. You should have seen the look on her face when I told her I was leaving right then. I didn't give a crap. She was a miserable old hag who treated me (and the other underlings) like garbage because she could. I went to Vegas.

Considering how blunt I am, I would not hesitate to tell them to shove their job where the sun don't shine. And give them 5 minutes notice. I'm not kidding either. If they are that bad, so is their reputation in the industry. No one will care, take the new job now.
