I hear you. I have used crystal, businessobjects and spotfire and those tools sort of empower endusers and powerusers. The target users are of course less technical and with lower expectations. You can get by with it
My previous work was with a big oil firm and i have showed them their $20mm spotfire and businessobjects project is no match for excel+sql. My work had all the nice-to-haves to like overlaid graphs of different styles with vivid colors
