My business recently hired a young man who wears eye makeup. Picture a slightly less extreme version of Johnny Depp's Pirates-of-the-Caribbean look - total hipster metrosexual. The business is a recreational service where employees are working closely with kids and families. He's a nice guy but the look is absurd and I'm concerned that some (or most?) parents will find it odd, or bizzare or worse. There's no doubt that people roll their eyes or comment behind his back.

Is there any reason I can't tell him to leave the makeup at home? I've talked to a lot of people and it's hard to find a consensus, e.g., you'd need to tell female employees not to wear makeup either or it's discriminatory.

The business is in an upscale NY suburb where political correctness runs rampant, so people do see this kind of thing. The clientele has a large "lifestyle.alt" element - gay, women with extensive tattoos, guys with dreads, etc etc. all alongside suburban moms and little kids. Nobody seems to care about that.

[FWIW the guy got hired by a fluke, I would have vetoed him immediately but now it's too late]

You worrying about you would probably be the best course of action for all involved

Well, Marilyn Manson looks like a total DORK without makeup! If he needs that Marilyn Manson look then it's ok, otherwise no.

It is absolutely normal to have a discussion about an employee who is customer fronted concerning their appearance.

I wouldn't think twice about have that discussion.

Unless you're his direct manager, I don't think it's your place. Personally, it does not bother me. Would I do a double take? Sure. But I'm cool with the guy doing his own thing. If it really becomes an issue with the clientele, leave it to the manager to decide what to do. Hopefully everyone's grown up enough there to not let it bother them.

Please, please, please don't start behind the scenes drama with this guy because you're uncomfortable with the way he lives his life.

Very good point! I just assumed he was the manager. My bad.

Who hired him? What are the company guidelines? I need more information. Is he delivering the goods? If not, fire him and get someone more mainstream. If he is, then I guess his eyeliner is not affecting his job.

Seriously? It sounds like it is only causing YOU a problem. It may not be "normal" or "ordinary" or whatever, but obviously he is comfortable and is doing the job he was hired to do. If I understood you correctly, others there have tats and dreds etc., and that is ok? If people comment or roll their eyes, it is his situation to deal with, not yours. Butt out and go find somebody else to hover over. This guy is the least of your worries - unless he's prettier than you are???

Mind your business. If management hired him, then they will deal with him and any consequences from his employment.
