Was hired as a W-2 I.T. Contractor specifically for a project but was quickly let off within 3 weeks due to the project owner's private tiff with my employer.
Company has no other work for me and my boss said he'll tell future employers whatever good reference I want. However they said I'm still on the roles but not receiving a paycheck and possibly health insurance(I'm working on this now).
I'm 100% sure they prefer me to quit and find another company first rather than outright fire me. They tried to find a job within their corporate network but nothing is available at my skill level.
It's been nearly a month in limbo.....should I just push them to fire me? Can I collect unemployment after only working 3 weeks. The nature of how and when they hired me really pissed off my last employer since they wanted me to eschew the 2 weeks notice..... only managed a 1.5 weeks with a new guy with 0 experience given a quick run down.
They want you to find a new job fast so they don't have to pay unemployment and have their rates go up. Most contract agencies will just dump you whenever a project ends or the client doesn't want you. I'd file for UI compensation as you already have been laid off in everything but name.
As far as unemployment, usually you need to work certain prior quarters (usually within the past year or so) and have a specific amt of earnings in those prior quarters. Each state's rules can differ somewhat. You are eligible NOW to signup for unemployment because you aren't working any hours due to the company cancelling the project and not needing you any more.
When you signup for unemployment benfits, they will run the numbers (how much money year earned and when) to see if you worked enough in prior quarters to qualfiy.
If this 3 week job is your only job within past 1.5 years, then you likely don't have enough earnings to qualify for unemployment.
But you don't need to be fired/laid off or resign from your current jo in order to signup for unemployment insurance. Not working any hours because the company cancelled the project and no longer needs you to do any work/lack of any other work for you...... is good enough.

My last employee prior to this one also stiffed me on UI payments to the state and is being investigated/audited by the IDES for....would that have any effect? Aside from this job, nothing has ever been paid into it.

There is an unemployment subforum beneath this one. Ask your question there. There are some folks on that sub-forum that know the rules and can give guidance on handling red tape related to unemployment benefits.
My guess answer is "no", that you can't get any money since only 3 weeks has been paid in. However, the issue of the prior employer being investigated for not paying could have an effect on your potential to get benefits since you really worked during that period and through no fault of your own, money should have been paid on your behalf by the employer.

3 weeks most likely won't count for or against UIB. It's certain prior quarters that count. You might very well be dinged by unemployment for resigning from the job prior to this one, in fact it's a certainty. You still need to register and claim because every day you don't will be a day not counting toward the wait/punishment period.
