Why after all of the hilarious parodies of this iconic daytime TV commercial do people still go to for profit schools?

Because they don't know better and lack any real guidance from friends or family who are most likely in the same boat as they are.

So you have some poor young guy (or gal) who is tired of working for minimum wage (or public assistance) and wants to work hard at school to have something like a career and this is where they wind up. Essentially culling the harder working self motivated types from the herd and saddling them with loads of debt without any real career prospects.

It kinda sucks.

People search online for reviews, features, and weigh the cost to value before buying a $500 washing machine. You would think they could do the same for a college before spending tens of thousands of dollars and multiple years of their life to attend.

Thanks Everest for your contribution to the student loan bubble....maybe for profits will disappear like mortgage backed securities when it bursts.

Keep in mind that the targeted prey is often under-educated and lacks the resources to tell fact from fiction. I can probably find a dozen sites right now on the internet that prove that: Elvis still lives, astrology is real, and that UFO's control Congress. I know that's all nonsense, but that stuff still sells to somebody out there.

Also, we have wrongly instilled in several generations the notion that "going to college" alone is a magic ticket to the good life. It's not. While having a degree is always better than nothing having one, everything else being equal, having a *useful* degree and not going deeply in debt is key, as is job experience. But many people honestly don't know any of this stuff, and there's a whole industry set up out there to exploit the ignorant, feed them lies, and take their money.

I saw that commercial on TV some years ago. I don't understand why anyone would go to a for profit college like DeVry or ITT tech. They cost more than a community college and seldom have any real accreditation. I agree that college isn't for everyone, but without some kind of higher education/technical training after high school you will most likely end up working for minimum to near minimum wages if not totally unemployable. The for-profit colleges are obviously capitalizing on that.

The truth of the matter is technology and outsourcing are quickly eliminating jobs and no amount of college is going to help when there ain't any jobs.

You are actually better off sitting on your couch talking on the phone all day. Its better than sitting on the couch getting calls from collections agencies after you graduate from Everest.

The ones that get me are those stupid MMI/UTI commercials. The recruiters basically follow the same script with crappy, generic music playing in the background.

You would think that the government would seek to protect people... Except, that would interfere with corporate interests, and corporations are people too don't ya know! Unfortunately, it's the least educated who need the most help, and they have largely been thrown to the wolves on wallstreet like Graham Holdings Company and DeVry education group.

It used to be, a fool and his/her money soon parted ways. Today, folks are parting ways with their money before they even had a chance to take possession of it. Makes ya wonder if the system was designed that way...
