The best was when my coworker pitched it to me and he said " You just have to get people to adjust their buying habits " I turned to him, since Price Club was new, and said " I don't want my buying habits changed I like to touch and feel....catalogs are for LLBean buddy" that ended the pizza party
So my dad was involved with Amway for most of my youth, therefore I feel perfectly qualified to speak on this matter. It is a legal company, that leaves a lot of wiggle room for its sales force to.....act freely. Notice I used the term sales force. You are not a business owner as an Amway rep, you are their sales force. You are selling THEIR products, with a commision. You arent quitting your "J.O.B." to own your own business, you are quitting your job to work for Amway as a salesman. Once youve fallen for the idea of leaving your job, or doing amway on the side, you are then PRESSURED heavily to attend "functions." These functions are pep rallies that use psychological games to keep you obsessed on the idea of getting grossly wealthy. The "diamonds" give stories on how poor they were before amway, and how they now write dinky little 10,000 dollar checks to put gas in their Gulfstream to head to their house in Fiji. Thanks all to Amway of course. Then they pressure you to buy motivational tapes and books in order to keep you glued while youre away from the functions. Amway itself doesnt pressure you of course, that would be a borderline no no. Rather you have half trained "high up the food chain" salesmen as mentors over you. These mentors can act as nice, or filthy as they want in order to keep you buying and selling, and the company is not liable. Ive heard many a story about harassment from these diamonds.
Anyways my dad got out of it thank God but still tries to defend Amway saying it was a good company if....if this, if that. He basically was torn apart by the psychological games by feeling like a failure. He was told he wasnt a good enough salesman and it was his fault he wasnt rich. He now has horrible self esteem and no confidence in himself. The fact of the matter is not everyone is a salesman. I would make a horrible salesman, so I would never try it. But the fact is this company doesnt tell you, "Come be a salesman for us...." .....no....they say "Quit your job, own your own company, and be filthy rich like us!"
It's no different than weight loss pills, exercise videos, therapists and much else people pay good money but don't seem to be any better off.
I don't think buying exercise videos and a few weight loss pills on TV usually ends up with your finances, friendships and family relations in ruin. Those who really get into MLMs and pursue them for years suffer grave consequences. I know people whose lives have amounted to nothing thanks to MLMs in great part.
Yeah, I heard that same pitch from some folks from a MLM company I once applied with in my just-recently-out-of-college-and-needing-a-job days (I simply abandoned them and looked elsewhere after a couple of days and some talking to from my parents who had fruitless experiences from similar companies).
By the way, hearing MLMers' denigration of 9-5-type jobs leads me to question whether these are the same yokels who keep outsourcing all of the actual jobs to India and other developing countries.
Come on, MLMers are mostly losers and they don't even get close to positions where one could decide on such things. Not even close.
That guy does a lot of videos speaking out against MLMs. I particularily enjoyed his Amway one. Not surprised he got 100 more downvotes though... the ambots and other MLM-ers seem to be in full force trying to discredit these types of videos, even though they're told to not watch TV or go on the internet anymore

So no its not illegal, its just slimy.
Good points, but it's not really about if ur a good salesman or not. If someone wanna do sales, they shouldn't pursue amway either, there are way better sales jobs with way better returns like insurance, real estate, etc.
Why have I never met any of these suckers? I would consider it a fun night out to go to one of these events and crack up over the idiocy.
Its not nearly as fun as it would seem. Its kinda sad really to see how much they have bought into the idea, and how desperate they are to sign you up. Poor fellas.
