It seems like everywhere I go in Northern VA there are help wanted signs. Not the standard ones you use to see in retail stores and restaurants that were basically looking for people just in case there might be a need. But instead, huge desperate HELP WANTED signs that appear to be begging for workers. The signs and flyers are now all over the stores and in huge print and even given to customers with their purchases.
I am not going to be working for minimum wage myself but I approached one of the managers at a drug store that had signs and flyers all over the place and told them my son might be interested. He told me that they were just plain disparate for workers and strongly encouraged my son to apply.
My sister who lives in Minneapolis said they are also desperate for workers there too.
Are the help wanted signs misleading? Are stores and restaurants really all that desperate for people to work?
I recently moved out of NOVA. I never noticed any desperate need for retail and restaurant workers. Also, considering the COL in that area cashier and server jobs don't pay enough for an adult to live off of. These stores/restaurants may be gearing up for the summer and are looking for teens and college kids home on summer vacation. I doubt the jobs are full time permanent or will go beyond the summer months.
It's the same here in the Seattle area, has been for a couple years now. There are enough decent jobs out there that not enough people are taking these retail and restaurant jobs.

And that is something you would notice.
I call BS on this post. If you Google "Northern Virginia desperate for retail/restaurant workers", the only thing that comes up is this thread.
If there was any truth to it wouldn't there TV station websites and newspaper articles on it?
There may be some jobs, but they're part time and low paying in a high COL area, they would be suitable for teens and college kids, but that's about it.
Not certain about NOVA but I know that Minneapolis certainly needs a lot of skilled workers. Between the cold and the already low population, they can't get people to move there to take work.
I have received several calls from up that way looking for millwrights and welders. Unfortunately, what they are paying wouldn't convince me to move further north, especially after this past winter.

*begging for workers who are willing to get paid a crappy wage and be exploited.
