To the OP I would say broaden your horizons in the job search, maybe look outside of digital media. Maybe lower your standards a bit and try and find a job in another field. From what I have been seeing the hiring process seems inefficient and full of steps it doesn't need anyway.

Also:

Look for part time work
Out of state
Paid internships
Volunteer experience

This is the crux of the problem. Some of the smartest people in the business have probably thought long and hard about this problem and still haven't come up with any solutions. Paywall? Special editions that require a subscription fee? The internet is awash in free content so people will just go somewhere else.
