OP if it's any consolation (probably not) I had a long and successful career and every single position I ever held was more about politics than ability to do the job.

It's the nature of the (office) beast.

Sociopaths in suits effing with people's lives just because they CAN.

Zoikes! It may not have been you. Sounds like you're better off; crazy places to work, whether by job or co-workers, are sometimes best left behind. If you really liked the job then maybe you could work in the same industry but at a different location. Don't take this stuff personal even if it led to your dismissal. Just go on. People as the ones you worked with usually find a replacement to hammer after they get rid of one.
