So my husband and I are moving out of state in 11 weeks or so depending on when we can secure a rental home. I don't have the ability to travel for an interview as of now. My husband will be going to school and they are supposed to find us jobs but I want to look on my own.
How soon before relocating (without the ability to travel) would you apply and send resumes? I will have a bachelors degree so I will be looking for a professional position of some sort, possibly in education, science, or I can fall back on my old skills of working in a call center.
It depends on how the job market is, at the destination location. If it's good (low unemployment rate, etc) and your skills are needed, I would say about 3 months. If it's a city with less than an optimal job market, 5-6 months or more.
I would not move anywhere until employment was secured.
I'd be looking now.
Unfortunately that isn't an option seeing as my husband has a start date for school so we have to go.
I am going to contact his school tomorrow about jobs they have available and go from there. My resume will have to be updated but that won't take me very long. Guess it's time to start looking!
Don't wait until later. It can take 1-3 months, before you get through the hiring process. There are multiple steps, and about 1-2 weeks between each step.
I applied for one job in September. I didn't get the first call back until December. I was hired in January.
As for new college graduates, companies start recruiting in the fall to start after spring graduates. They want first dibs on the best candidates. That's a 9 month lag.

I've been trying to relocate to Michigan since December, still no bites. I still have my job here, but was debating starting another (transferrable) job where I currently live. So far no bites. If you can, find retail with no time limits and transfer with them.
Start looking now. If anyone truly wants to hire you, they'll understand your situation and figure out a way to interview you long-distance. Perhaps over Skype?
