I don't believe "junk jobs" exists. Just low, medium, and high wage jobs. Jobs/positions/roles that are subject to the market that do not necessarily reflect those individuals working them. We can't have everyone working the top tier paying jobs.. that in of itself is unsustainable/unrealistic. What is important is to sustain opportunity.... the opportunity for individuals with the drive to work themselves up the ladder. If you suppress that opportunity we as a society are destined to produce generations of people who are marginalized to the point that they no longer participate in society.

If I was born poor and see no opportunity to improve my life not matter how much drive, talent, or will I possess, I will resort to crime and cheating the system in order to survive. This lack or availability of opportunity is one of the key elements that differentiates the lives of people between third world, developing, and developed nations.
Someone in a call center has a junk job. It's disconnected from the rest of the organization, low paying, and very high stress. Jobs on the low end are generally far more stressful than professional jobs.

Not everyone can do something they love or something that makes them enough money to pursue the interests they have. What jobs exist and in what quantity are driven by market forces (and government intervention). You ask any little kid what he wants to be when he grows up, and he'll say fireman or astronaut. Well, guess what? There are only a couple dozen openings for astronauts, and the competition for firefighter positions is fierce as well. There can only be so many winners in society. Most people are going to end up doing something they hate for a wage they can barely survive on.

Americans are the only people on this planet who will work, work, work for the man, with less real take home pay and benefits each year, and increasing costs each year, and go into more debt each year, and go bankrupt from bills each year, and never complain.

Why? Because we are all going to become billionaires and we live in the greatest country on earth! We're special. And gosh darn it, we will feed the world, and we will build spaceships to take us to Mars, and we will enable the banks and corporations to make trillions because we can do it! Let's do it!

It's pathetic behavior, people. Look in some ways it's useful, because at least the society runs, at least things get done. But it's pathetic, to see people running around in a crazed frenzy to achieve the impossible, all based on a collective delusion.

I myself am done. Finished. I am going on 34 years old. I will never, ever work hard for this country. Never.

I'm proud of saying that, think of me what you will, flame away.
Dude, I turn 37 soon and feel the same way.

I wonder what would happen if a bunch of people just kind of half-azzed things at work. Not enough to get fired. More like "mistake", "mistake", "mistake", "something done right", "mistake". And people doing that on a large scale to seriously affect employers and the economy and make a statement.

I disagree- call center is sales therefore high stress, and customer service (keeping sales). But that's why they're high pressure. I myself have chosen low paying jobs specifically because they are so low stress and so manageable as I do not do well under pressure or responsibility.

The correlation is not that strong. I'd much rather be a secretary than a CEO even if the work hours are barely existent. Everyone knows who the CEO is. Who wants that kind of responsibility?

Again I say... have you never read Atlas Shrugged? This mentality is like a socialist version of "Going Galt". lol

or Cartman's famous "Screw Yu Guys, I'm Goin Home!" writ large.

To the OP, I agree with you for the most part. I'm a couple of years younger and I've seen the whole country just sink into a mountain of **** for a long time. Of course, the third world isn't exactly paradise. I also think that a good chunk of Americans don't care. As long as they can get the latest shiny thing from Best Buy and drive the latest 10mpg crossover then they really don't care if they lose their freedom. A smaller set of Americans probably prosper due to the ignorance and apathy of the former as well.

Me be American...me love shiny iToy...me love to eat at Applebees! We pile into Toyonda SUX and go there every Friday and eat fried mystery meat! Ugga Bugga!!!

Well, I don't know. Something has to be done because the country is sliding off a cliff. I think a lot of people have the same feeling that nothing is ever going to change and are wondering: "What can we do? Is this really it? We're just going to settle for this garbage?!" I think many of us feel overwhelmed because when people start talking about the economy, a lot of times they use all this technical language and they aren't clear with what they're talking about and it loses the average person.

Personally, my life is quickly going uphill Not sure where are the doom and gloom is coming from. My advice is just find a skill re something you LIKE how to do, do it well, start a business, work for yourself only, work a lot and don't expect a lot of money Works for me.
