"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime" is a very apropos saying.
And it does not only apply to the time you spent in the legal system. This is something kids need to learn BEFORE they attempt a crime and head down that path. There WILL be consequences. Society will not just roll over and say "you learned your lesson - so no foul."
Learn now that for most of children who decide to follow the criminal life*...
You will be looked down upon.
You will NOT get a great job.
You will NOT get a good apartment.
You will NOT be able to sign your name and take things home on credit.
You will NOT get the hottie down the street who is looking for a decent person to raise a family with.
You will NOT be placed in a position of trust.
If you are killed in a back alley - almost no one will care.

Spoiler
That is unless you are the son or daughter of someone rich or famous, or a white collar criminal. In these cases - carry on.

It doesn't seem like they have many options besides starting their own business. In the case of someone injured, I doubt anyone would advise them to say they haven't been working because they'd been in hospital for a year and then stayed on disability another year, etc. I doubt that's attractive.
How on earth does society expect these people to succeed when the average slub barely makes 40k a year?
lol
They start at the bottom taking any crap job they can, and then in time they are able to get good jobs. It is not much harder than that.

1) Mostly true. To me, someone who pulls themselves up and out of that life, I respect (Not sure i'd say 'look up to') quite a bit.
2) True at the start.. After time, this goes away, pending on the crime. though not entirely.
3) More false than true. Again, time and the crime are factors. Ties to #2 though.
4) False. Background checks are generally not run when applying for credit, credit checks are. Applies to #3, too.
5) Certainly false.. Hot women love the bad boys.
6) False. Ties to #5.. A parent is the ultimate position of trust.
7) False. That would then be a crime and in this point, the tables would be turned. I'll give another saying for you.. "Justice is Blind".
Our whole criminal justice system is grossly incompetent and should be dismantled and replaced with a competent system. The first change should be that nobody should ever go to prison unless they committed a crime so serious that they should never get out of prison. In other words, prison should be a one-way door, period, unless the person's innocence is proven. There would be no issue of what people should do when they get out of prison, because they wouldn't get out. The 2nd change is that we should get rid of all the lawyers and replace them with people who have common sense and a decent work ethic and aren't sleazier than felons. And criminal trials shouldn't be a game where lawyers try to outmaneuver each other. Everyone involved should have an incentive to prove the truth. And the truth should be the basis for what happens. The competence of a lawyer should never be a factor in whether anyone goes to prison.
I believe the OP referred to "criminals", not the wrongly accused.
