I was recently denied a job because of my bankruptcy and poor credit. I was shocked! I mean seriously this was a job selling designer purses so a person with zero credit would have gotten highered over me....is this common?

Not sure how common it is, but unless you are in one of the small number of states that ban or limit pre-employment credit checks, it's not illegal.

Will Bankruptcy Affect My Job or Future Employment? | Nolo.com

Even if you are in one of those states, a bankruptcy might be discovered through a background check that includes public records searches. The logic behind such an employment decision is debatable, but if the job you applied for included responsibilities for handling money or paying invoices for products that may have been a factor.

I'm not sure about the legality of the bankruptcy, but if she is handling money, wouldn't the poor credit reflect badly on her?

Yep... you have proven that you are not good with handling money.

Well, the employer may be nervous that because you have a problem handling money, you might swindle him in some way.

In the future, just don't apply for jobs that deal with money.

The designer purse realm sounds exactly the industry where I would not want to hire someone with bankruptcies and poor credit.

Counting change etc...???? Not sure that is the same thing especially since the bankruptcy was because my husband was a chronic drunk and got multiple DUI and domestics which left us paying for five lawyers. Now going through a divorce, but, still unsure of why that makes my job suffer.

That's one reason to never mix your finances with someone else. Maybe you'll find a position where they don't do a credit check.
