Yesterday I went to an interview for an analyst role and first met with the VP. He went over my resume and verified a few things. Soon after, I was told to sit in a conference room, as I'll be interviewed by 2 managers 1 on 1. The 1st interview was a little more intimidating, I was told "sell me that pen" and then the final question was "tell me a joke, but you don't have to, if you don't feel comfortable." I thought it over for a little bit, and she had a big smirk on her face.
"Two antennas met on a roof. They fell in love and got married. The wedding wasn't much but the reception was great."
She bursted out laughing and went out the door. The 2nd interview was more of a typical interview, at the end the receptionist came in and told me I was done for the day, and that the hiring manager would get back to me in 3 days. Pretty weird interview.
I'm always afraid someone will ask me to tell them a joke during interviews. I am SO freaking horrible at remembering jokes and I don't know why. I can only remember one and it's in Korean, so unless the interviewer is Korean, it obviously wouldn't make any sense.
That's so interesting. I actually think the telling a joke question can be a win-win even if your joke is terrible (I'm known for making no one laugh with my jokes). So long as you avoid telling something depraved.
The job interview scenario of asking you to tell a joke was probably to get you out of your comfort zone and see how you would react to the unexpected. I've not had this happen to me in an interview, but as long as the sample joke is not inappropriate, I think it might be an interesting interview tactic. Also to add, I'm terrible at retelling jokes. The only ones I know by heart are very bad and not really funny except maybe to a 10 year old.
This is nonsense. HR and management are now stooping to this level. I would have refused.
