I'm looking for a sturdy, but fashionable tote bag for work. Something that can hold books, an iPad, water bottle, lunch, an extra pair of shoes, and whatever other necessities. I don't want to be resigned to using a Wings beach bag. . Thanks in advance.

Check out the Baggalini website. They have a lot of nice bags of various types, sizes, and colors. I have my eye on one of their new backpacks.

I have a tote bag for work that I absolutely adore!!!

It has lots of pockets, both inside and out, zippers, its just awesome. One of the things I like the most is that the zippered pocket on the back is wide enough to fit a file folder - 8.5X11" comfortably.

It comes in a bunch of different colors, and if you don't like this style, this brand has a bunch of other ones.

Here it is: Mosey Gatitote Platinum - Zappos.com Free Shipping BOTH Ways

Look on Neiman Marcus Last Call website. The Neiman Marcus brand tote looks like leather and is fashionable and functional and usually a very good price with the discounts -- under $50.

Not sure what you are looking to spend but I love my Longchamp Le Pliage large tote. It is super lightweight, fits comfortably on my shoulder, comes in a bunch of colors, and holds a ton of things. I take all of the things you mentioned to work and it easily holds it all. My only complaint is that the corners of the bag wear quickly especially as compared to the price of the bag. But I still love it. I have not found another bag that is so lightweight and could hold so much.

How about LL Bean? You can get your initials on a bag for just $5 extra!

Saddleback Leather. First class stuff that is actually highly-functional. Only bags I know of that are complemented frequently by other guys and sometimes women.
