A registered nurse can earn 70k plus benefits with only having a bachelors degree. Not a bad deal. What other bachelor besides engineering can get you to earn that much money right after a 4 year university. Even with a 2 year program a graduate could earn 30 bucks and hour.

Personally I know there's different levels of nursing that ultimately do require different levels of education. The amount varies dramatically on the labor market. I see many get worked to the bone and remember a number of strikes. Until we really start expanding the number of licenses and practices it is still tied to corporate hmo's.

Is that the starting salary? In my area, starting salary is more like 40-45 for RNs and I don't think it's worth it for all of that work.

I would even look more at being a PA than a nurse. PAs make more.

There was a thread on this that got into this discussion last month.

To become a Physician Assistant you need like 3 years clinical experience right after college plus a masters degree. To become a nurse you only need a associates degree.

I think they do. I know nurses who work 36 hours a week and make well over 100k a year.

... Most are overworked and make around $40k starting.
The BSN doesn't do much nowadays. In order to get the better positions, most companies require a Master's now.

If you work as a nurse in LA or NY you can even reach 6 figures plus overtime in shifts.

Nursing is one of those fields like paralegal and computer programmer that comes in high demand and low demand cycles. Don't go into it because it is the new hot job, only do it if you would love it.

I agree with the above post.
Do NOT go into nursing for the money. It's a very high stress job - you should have a strong desire to care for people no matter how rotten they treat you.
I recommend job-shadowing a nurse on a busy floor if you can.
