The place where I work at has a main break-room that has 1) a table and several chairs, 2) two sets of lockers *one for your personal belongings and one for your work uniform*, 3) a refrigerator, and 4) a water cooler.

There are two shifts the employees can work... morning or afternoon.

There is an older male employee who works the afternoon shift. He arrives at work before his shift begins so he can eat his lunch. However, he does not like it when there are too many people in the break-room. Today when he arrived at work, there were several of us having our lunch in the break-room. He opened the door to the break-room, turned around, and left. A couple of minutes later he returns. One of the morning shift employees got up from her chair so he could sit in it.

He told everyone in the break-room that 1) there are too many people in here and 2) he will speak to *manager's name* about this because this should not happen.

What can a manager do about this?

A manager could schedule breaks at different times, so only a certain number of people are on break at a time.

I had scheduled breaks, when I worked in a call center. It's inconvenient, since you can't break at the same time as your friends.

A manager can schedule meal breaks. A good manager would tell Mr. Complainer that the break room is for employees who are taking a break from work -- not for employees who come in early and ***** about people being in the break room.

I agree, but in this case the manager may just go t scheduling times which will not help the early guy but make it less convenient for the rest. Most of us like to eat when e are hungry, not when the clock shows our scheduled time. My people rarely go at the same time, but then most either go out of the office to get lunch or eat at their desk.

It sounds like he's the one taking up space if he arrives to eat BEFORE his shift.

He can ask them to leave the store or clock in.

A manager can get another chair. Or suggest he eat elsewhere. It sounds like he has a morning job, leaves that and eats at the afternoon job. That's not unusual or unacceptable, although his reaction was.

Hopefully, there's room for another chair and that will make him happy.

Exactly, he can eat lunch at home. He is the one coming in early, the others are already on their shift.
