Go see a doctor on a Saturday asap. If your regular doctor doesn't have Saturday hours, find one who does.

For acid reflux, dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water. It will give you quick relief. Keep a box of baking soda in your desk at work. Do not drink this more than 3x per day. Or, you can use half a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water 7x per day.

The problem is that I've been having the worse reflux-type symptoms imaginable. Pain has been an issue at times, but really, the WORSE issue has been the bad nausea, and strong sensation that I have to throw up - I actually don't like the word nausea for this, to be honest, because I associate that with vertigo, being dizzy, etc. This isn't that - It's just a sensation in the stomach that gives me a strong urge to throw-up. This is ESPECIALLY bad anytime I have to sit down, or drive a car - I don't have these symptoms when I sit/drive, but they're just made much worse if I have them going on already.

Just trying to figure out what to do. I started Nexium a few days ago on Thursday evening. Was thirsty as I got up in the morning, so I took a drink of water, and felt nauseous – Feeling a bit better after taking the Nexium.

Anyway, it will take some time before my work benefits start to kick in, and in the meantime, I still have previous health insurance, but virtually no time to see a doctor between work and now that school will be starting. Also, I've already missed the 2nd half of my second day on the job last week, because of these issues. I kind of feel like if I start to miss a lot of time going to doctors (especially so early on), they're going to have cold feet, and bail on me...So, I'm just trying to figure this out.
All the doctor is going to do is give you Nexium and schedule you for as many tests as he can get away with. If I were you I would check out some natural remedies at the health food store or google natural remedies. I know that apple cider vinegar works well with heartburn, but I am not sure how it works with acid reflux.

You don't get it. That would be a good thing if he scheduled as many tests as he could, that way the OP would be closer to a root cause.
Apple cider vinegar works really well for symptoms but it doesn't get to the cause so it's very temporary.

This is a good idea, if he can't get to a doctor outside of working hours.

It doesn't really sound like acid reflux. That doesn't give you nausea, and the Nexium would probably work better. It could be something as serious as esophageal cancer, or maybe it's just an ulcer. Until you see a doctor, I'd take a probiotic yogurt such as Activia three times a day with a bit of milk. It can get rid of the bacteria most commonly associated with ulcers.

This is probably not the best thing to do, but I also have AR. I simply try not to eat anything until after work/school and that's worked so far.

I drink a glass or two of milk a day; I find that it helps me with my refux issues. I take my Nexium in the morning with milk. You can google what foods to avoid until you get it under control. Before I had mine under control, I used to sleep pretty much sitting up.

I used to have GERD but got rid of by watching my diet, when I ate, and I still keep the head of my bed elevated. My last endoscopy was great.

What you say just isn't matching what I've experienced, and read, about GERD. It is a burning in the back of your throat, cronic cough, sometimes pain in the back of your neck, throat, or face. I also had hoarseness at times. You said: WORSE issue has been the bad nausea, and strong sensation that I have to throw up - I actually don't like the word nausea for this, to be honest, because I associate that with vertigo, being dizzy, etc. This isn't that - It's just a sensation in the stomach that gives me a strong urge to throw-up. The drugs used to treat GERD are not intended to be used long term and you might be treating the wrong problem. Side effects are also common with them.

You clearly need to have a good physical as it could be an ulcer, IBS, or gall bladder and if you have any shortness of breath get help now.

I do understand not wanting to take time off from a new job but please find a specialist who has Saturday hours or lunch time appointments. You are worth it!

I second natural remedies, although if you could see a holistic person to get to the cause, that might be best. If you do go to an MD, see if they can test your acid levels. I believe Nexium reduces stomach acid, but many people actually have too little stomach acid.

My husband has had severe GERD, and developed a serious ulcer after taking Nexium for 7 years. So, I'd also suggest that if you do need Nexium in the short term, that you don't take it for too long.

One thing that's probably worth looking into is buying DGL from a health food store. This is what my husband takes now, and you wouldn't need to get to a doctor to buy it. My husband also makes a vegetable thing that includes cabbage (maybe search online). Side note, maybe ease into the apple cider vinegar if you decide to try it. I know it helps some people, but my aunt thinks she developed GERD from it.

Just realized this is a work thread not a natural health thread! I'd do everything natural that you think makes sense, and also make an appointment with an MD and/or natural health person.

Oops, additional comment, just read the post before mine, and now that I think about it, your symptoms do sound different than what my husband has when he has GERD. So, agree with advice above until you know what is wrong.

Since I work in the medical field, I think you need to see the doc and have anything worse than acid reflux ruled out. There's the worst case scenario of some sort of cancer growing that is having an effect on your ability to swallow or feel that you have to regurgitate. You could also have a pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett's esophagus. You could have a bleeding ulcer and since the gut cannot digest blood it feels as though it needs to come up and out. Ulcers can be caused by a bacteria, easy to check out with a cheap blood test, and cured with cheap antibiotics. You could also have some gallbladder issues happening. Or you could simply have acid reflux.

I have it horribly, related to an anxiety disorder. When stressed I wake up wanting to puke and can't look at food until mid-morning. That being said, I am able to manage the condition with some xanax (short term need) or klonopin (for longer term situations), a tablespoon of Maalox in the morning ( a few Tums or calcium chews will work the same for me too), sip cool water or some tea when I get to work...usually by mid-morning I find myself down in the office kitchen making some toast or rooting around in my lunch bag for a 1/2 sandwich or some crackers. If I feel the acid happening at work I keep a bag of oyster crackers or saltines in my desk to munch on. It seems to absorb the acid somehow, maybe the acid is passed through and out along with the food moving through the gut.

I find Nexium takes too long when I have short term anxiety. And when I have long term anxiety it gets pretty pricy to take it every day. So my goal is to keep the anxiety under control with meds that are very inexpensive, and treat the leftover acid with over-the-counter stuff as needed.

Best of luck to you. But to be on the safe side just get checked out. Not saying that you have to have a thousand tests done, but at least let your primary care doc have a look, maybe do an abdominal ultrasound (also relatively inexpensive) that will allow them to see any masses or problems with your liver or gallbladder.
