I agree. Promoting and encouraging employees HELPS the manager and the company. Happy, engaged employees are far easier to lead. But I'm not going to hand out meaningless promotions just to stroke the ego of someone who half-@sses it every day. I will give employees a list of items to work through to be prepared for a promotion and then they don't do it because it requires effort. They'd rather have a promotion handed to them as a prize for showing up to work.
