I'm 18 and sick of the crap at home and whether I'm getting kicked out or not I want to move out. I live far (8 miles from town) and that's too far to walk and I don't drive (at least not yet) and I don't know if I can rely on anyone to drive me everyday twice a day. The weather is also terrible in Texas. Temperature gets to the triple digits often if not the high 90s (Yes I'm talking Fahrenheit). I would have to show up to work all hot and sweaty and I don't think an employer or anyone would like that. There's no public transportation where I live.

Bike commuting 8 miles each way is doable, that's like 30 minutes if you ride at 16mph. But it can be dangerous riding on streets when cars are passing you at 50+mph.

It's also not a good idea if you're not physically fit.

At the very least, your legs are going to feel like silly putty once you get off the bike from that amount of riding...

Interesting…some of the guys I know bike to work and it's a 30 mile ride. They don't seem to have any issues. Might do you some good. I know it's Texas and it's hot but if you get a job and you need to get there, I imagine most employers will understand if you get there with enough time to freshen yourself up. I'm also not really sure what your point is with this post? Are you just looking for people to commiserate with or were you looking for actual advice?

I'm wondering if its reasonable to bike that far. Some people say its unrealistic. Some people say its stupid. Some people its abnormal. How early might I have to leave? Like how many hours before work starts? I couldn't take a shower at work.

Get a job first, then worry about how to get there.

Don't you think your parents will be thrilled that you're working, and you can ask one of them to drive you?

Tell them you want to get your license, and start working on that too.

Who exactly is saying that to you?
Or is this just more of your own musings?
