I cannot understand the hiring process here in the US, I'm in Houston particularly, it seems like I qualified or even over qualified for the jobs I applied for yet I cannot land a job. I started applying three months ago since I have a part time Patient Care work. I'm planning to start a career and start somewhere. My resume is very good, my experience and promotions say a lot about me, my school in my home country is accredited in the USA, I applied even w GED requirement, and no one still hire me. How can I tell my prospect employer that they're missing a good employee and worker in me? I thought of not putting my Bachelors and other skills to land a GED requirement job, the Work Solutions will not allow me to under qualify myself. I'm a computer literate, type 70wpm, have handled clerical, assistant, retail, supervisory and managerial position, and if ever I still lack something, I'm willing to be trained just got to start somewhere! If you are an HR Specialist or a Recruiter, I would appreciate it if I can connect with you at LinkedIn. Please.

Ched, most of us can't understand the hiring process here, either. I posted these tips in another thread and will repeat them here:

  • joining local networking groups by checking meetup.com or your local chamber of commerce and asking if they will look at your resume or do some mock interviews
  • sending your resume to the hiring manager instead of HR if you're interested in the position
  • making sure your resume is achievement oriented and not task oriented
  • creating interview narratives that allow you to tell the hiring manager what you plan on doing for the company - how you plan to increase productivity, reduce costs, increase sales, etc. instead of simply answering questions about what you did at your last job
  • networking your butt off with people you know going back to grade school by connecting with them on linkedin and asking if they know of any positions in their company you might apply for
  • joining groups on linked in that are relevant, such as industry groups or local groups and posting that you're in the market to make a job or career change
  • reaching out to alumni in your area by sending your resume and asking if they know of any positions in their company you might apply for
  • asking for informational interviews with people in companies you want to work for, which is another way to network

You cannot be passive, you have to do the work. Many are finding it tough to find jobs.

I wish you the best of luck!

Staggerlee, were you the one who originally posted that video? If so, I thank you. I have sent it to a number of people, and even those who knew the twelve tips, have felt very motivated by him.

Very helpful and much appreciated!

But honestly, I'm frustrated of the system already. I don't think something is wrong with my resume because I have someone from the Workforce Solution (Dept of Labor) to check on it. There could never be wrong with my education, my experience and loyalty for a company is outstanding, and I got skills and a good disposition that goes with it. I wouldn't care being overqualified for a clerk job, working my way would easier when I'm in a company, right? But I just can't get the hiring process. I don't want to think that it is because I'm a new immigrant? There must something be wrong here? And I'm so confused. Do you have a headhunter friend who could just evaluate my resume and tell me what's wrong? So frustrating

Post your resume here. Let us critique it but remove any identifying information. I reworked my resume several times before filling it up with the latest corporate speak and buzz words and that really works. Maybe I should post it as an example.

Hey there MPowering1, I'm glad this site that I newly discovered, provides me help, really appreciate it. I have already tried a lot of networking. I have even tried to establish my credit history, tried to headhunters, tried Social Media. Submitted a bunch of online application. The closest that I got was being interviewed by the Big Boss after two whole panel. I can see they were impressed, but can't figure out why was I not hired despite no competition? I would need someone who can evaluate me or my resume. I could easily pass an interview, but I can't figure out what's wrong? Must be SSN? It couldn't be drug test, I never have a vice?

Could going back to school help a new immigrant to be hire by America? But, really? I can type with closed eyes ( err.. One eye closed ) thanks a lot for the tip!

Please do post your resume if you can Staggerlee666. I will figure out how to post my resume here taking out vital informations. I'd be more than grateful! I need your #2 tip on your video. My job is to get a job! I actually have a part time because this is the only thing that accepts me. I'm happy with my work with the elderly despite Long hours, manual labor, no insurance and who wouldn't want to start a career?

In my frustration, i even emailed back one employer saying, just give me a career I can start with, that's even in production, and let me work more than your expectation, then if I can't prove all my worth , I will get myself out of their system without them telling me.
