Let's say for example that my current commute is 15 miles (~30 min in heavy traffic). In two weeks, I drive 300 miles just for work. But if I'm working only 7 days every 2 weeks, then I could do 21.5 miles to work, which would add up to be 301 miles every 2 weeks.
Now we'll go with a more realistic commute which is 25 miles (up to 1 hour in heavy traffic) which is 500 miles every 2 weeks. If I do 7 on and 7 off, I can do 36 miles to work, which would be 504 miles every 2 weeks.
In both of those cases I'm assuming a lot of things. The extra driving I do on the weekends would have to be equal to the amount I would drive on my week off.
Would you ever consider the extra 11 miles in each direction?
Figuring your commuting cost on a biweekly basis seems to make good sense.
I know a friend of mine who traveled pretty far for a 7 on/7 off job on a river tugboat. of course with that job, the commute only had to be done once as you stay on the boat for the whole week. Thought it was a good deal
