Hello. I accepted a part time position recently. At first, I was told it did not include benefits because it was only going to be 25-28 hours and 40 hours is the magic number to be eligible for benefits.
As it turns out, I am now working 35-38 hours per week. I would like to bring up benefits with my employer. I know I am not doing 40 hours, but couldn't I ask if I could pay into some sort of job based benefits. I'd like to see if it could be less expensive than what I am paying now by myself.
If company policy is that you need to work 40 hours then asking for benefits will not get you anywhere but will make you look like a problem employee. You are much better off asking for a full-time job instead. If you have been with the company for a while, proven your worth, and they are almost working you full time hours anyway, then there may be a way to transition into a full-time position.
Don't discuss this based on "I want full time because benefits will be less expensive for me."
Instead phrase it around the value you bring to the company and that you feel it would be equitable if they would make a full-time commitment to you based on that value.
Personally I find it unethical to keep employees on temp no-benefits status by working them just under the hours needed to qualify for full-time. If you are in the position to apply for other jobs then I would definitely start doing that regardless of any discussion you may have with the current company.
