Should an Employer?? (work, pay, change, check)

I would like to ask, should an employer call there employee's if they are late? Where I was working until today, the scheduel changed on a daily basis now. I went into work today to find out that, someone else was on my shift. I was sepose to work last wednesday also at 6 pm and when I got there, they had changed the scheduel to 4 pm. No one had called me to notify me of this change. When I told them that, they should have had communication with me some more, they told me that it was always up to me to go in and check on changes. Now, it is a 20 minute ride to work and they want me to go in and look!!! Maybe if they would pay my gas sure. What do you think? Should they call you for any changes or if you are late?
