My father was an electrical engineer at the same large defense contractor from the day he graduated college with a BSEE until he retired at age 62. My mother was a mail carrier for the USPS for about 10 years once we (her children) were old enough not to need adult supervision.

Interestingly, the apple didn't fall too far from the tree in some cases, but really far away in others, when it comes to the chosen careers of my siblings.

Brother - BSEE, MSEE, MBA, now a medical doctor
Me - BSCS, some grad school. Software engineering manager
Sister 1 - No college. Administrative assistant.
Sister 2 - BA in in psychology, MS in social work in something
Sister 3 - BSEE, MSEE, MBA. Program manager.
Sister 4 - BS of some sort, graduated from law school. Lawyer.

Income wise, my Dad was a mid-level engineer. In today's world, he probably would have made around $150K when he retired.

There's a wide range of incomes among my siblings. In descending order (not the career order listed above):

$400K
$230K
$190K
$50K
$45K
$28K

I amazed that we all turned out so differently considering we were raised the same.

My dad was a cashier/stock person/janitor......at the grocery store my family owned. (He was also a volunteer EMT and firefighter, but I'm not sure if that counts as a "job")

Mom has always been a schoolteacher.....mainly 3rd and 4th grade, but she also was the art & music teacher for her school one year.

Both were already physicians when I was born (college sweethearts), then my father got an specialization and my mother a masters in public health. Then they decided to go back to college when I was finishing my degree and now they're both lawyers too. They practice both careers (more my mother than my father), always self employed.

They love to learn, and instilled that in us.

My dad worked on a farm as a kid and in a family owned bakery. As soon as he graduated high school he was in the Navy. By the time he was 19 he was on a Destroyer in the South Pacific. His job was as a Fire Control Technician. What that means is the big guns on the front of the destroyer, he would take readings from the radar and point those big guns at what ever he needed to hit.

Before I was born he was sent to Port Hueneme CA to work with a new program setting up ship and weapons systems all over the planet. Eventually he left that when he got out of the Navy and went to work for Southern California Edison. Eventually he opened his own business having to do with Electrical Engineering. He worked with a few Government Contractors. When the cold war ended he was out of work. Contracts dried up. He was out of work for maybe 7 years from the mid 1980's into the 1990's.

A friend told him that Wells Fargo was looking for seasoned workers. (Older people). He ended up working with Wells Fargo until he retired in 2002.

My mom was a house wife and kept the home together raising 8 kids, 4 boys 4 girls. I think she had the harder job.

My dad is almost 80 and my mom is 77. They have had an awesome life and are happily retired.
