I had to use it once when I had to print out a form and fax it over to someone immediately. Other than that, no. It's generally frowned upon. Being in a new job makes you vulnerable, so I would avoid doing things you aren't sure about.
Most people at my office do. As long as you aren't doing it during a busy time. I find plane tickets on the printer all the time. We also have 12 printers at my office so most people will print personal things to their "local" printer vs the nice printers which do stapling and other fancy things.
At my job it's not easy. We charge printing and copying to our clients so if we want to print or make copies we have to use a project code. They have given us each a code so that we can do personal printing and we are billed for any personal copying or printing that we do.
If you do so without permission then, yes, it's a "no-no". If you worked as a car salesman would you think it would be OK to take a car off the lot every night to ride around in?
Really? You think this is a valid comparison? No wonder HR is so messed up. Is it also theft to charge their phone at their desk?

How many copies are you talking about? Printing has become so cheap that it probably cost more to keep track of every usage, unless you talking about hundreds or thousands of pages at a time.
Since my company prints thousands of pages a day and has 5 or 6 mega printer/copiers, I think it's OK to print a couple of hundred pages a year for personal purposes, yes.

I do. I print so rarely. It would be amazing if I even printed 6 times this year or the last at home or work. I haven't printed with any regularity since about 2004.

We just got a memo about that, apparently it is frowned upon, at least down here at the peon level.
As far as printing the boss doesn't mind if it's an occasional thing and it is ... not fluff? Copies of school records that need to be mailed off, insurance information that needs to be submitted, or real estate dealings, that kind of thing. I think they would draw the line at school projects, shopping, lists and the like.
