I was recently hired and prior to accepting the job. I explained I had two trips previously planned, these are important ones and it would have been a deal breaker if I was told I couldn't take the time off. Now, I'm told I cannot go because of being short staffed. I understand this but.. I would be gone two days in October and two in November. I guess now I'll be looking for something else. Anyone else have this problem?

That's really crummy that you gave them the info during the interviewing stage that you needed those days off, and they agreed - in order for you to accept. Now they say they are short staffed. Well, it's past the mid-point in October. Are those two days later this month? Are you going to call in sick instead?

I have only had a trip planned once, and made sure I got it in writing. I can't imagine a company being so awful to hire you and not let you take the days off.

Two days? I thought you were going to say you would be gone for two weeks.

Is the person who OK'd your time off now the person refusing to let you use it? What does HR say about this? Can you go above the person's head and explain like you did here? They will be "short staffed" if you quit or get fired, so what's the big deal?

Was this time off agreed upon in writing? If it is, then you should stick that in their face and say that it was in the agreement. If not, good luck. I would tell these people in advance you have this time off and that it was okayed in your hiring conditions. I have seen people get hired, then a month later take a week off to go to a wedding that they aren't in.

If they are that short staffed, they probably won't fire you if you take the time anyway, right?

How nice it would be if we could all take vacations every month and just traipse off to another job if the current one can't handle that. Cry me a river.
