just wondering , because i know my brother travelled to the other side of the country for his current job , so just wondering how far is the furthest you have travelled for a job or a job interview?
Job interview, about 70 miles, a Denny's I didn't end up working at in San Bernardino, CA.
Current job, been here 7 years:
Originally and currently based out of Denver.
I've been
-On the north, as far as Casper, WY
-On the east, as far as Kansas City, MO
-On the south, as far as Pueblo, CO
-On the west, as far as Aspen, CO
and most everywhere in between.
I did a six-month transfer to Spokane, WA (lived in, moteled in; also stayed in a trailer in Post Falls, ID):
During that time:
-On the north, Colville, WA
-On the east, Great Falls, MT
-On the south/west, Portland, OR
-On the west, Seattle, WA
and most everywhere in between.
I flew to Phoenix two weekends ago, to drive a cargo van back to Denver. I worked remotely in Phoenix.
During a family vacation to Seattle, we took a trip to see my boss in Portland.
I've worked remotely from Ridgecrest, CA.
I've done work paperwork during a personal vacation in Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL.
This is just me. Other people in the company have far more impressive travel records.
For the interview that I had for my current job I drove 2,280 miles round trip (I paid for it out of pocket). My mother thought I was crazy, but I knew my husband and I would be moving to the area anyway and I really wanted at least one of us to have a job lined up. Two weeks after the interview they called and offered me the job and were even willing to wait a month and a half so I could finish up my last 2 college classes and get my degree.
For interviews? I have done coast to coast a number of times, so call it 6,000 miles round trip. I did several rounds of video interviews for a job that would have required a 6500 mile relocation.
For a regular commute, I was in consulting for awhile. The furthest that I had to drive was about 45 miles each way every day Mon-Fri. I typically worked at a client site for 3-6 months at a time and I worked 2000 miles away on 2 different occasions for around 6 months each time. The client paid for my plane tickets though so I was at the client location Mon-Fri and would fly back home for weekends.
I took an international gig once in Germany and stayed there for 3 months. That client also paid for my flight and hotel and all expenses but only paid for 1 flight home in the middle of those 3 months.
The furthest that I traveled for a job interview was around 1500 miles away. The company paid for my flight and hotel though for the interview. I then relocated for the job (company paid for my relocation).
Current job: 45 miles there, 45 miles on the way back home- Monday to Friday 8am-4pm. The morning drive I don't mind because there is no traffic. The drive back home though, dear god. And yes gas sucks. However it is a decent job and more importantly I am gaining experience to put on the resume, so I will endure.
