The Baylor healthcare system here is the same way: no tobacco users.

If it is not a protected classes then it can be vetted out. Given the methods by which that someone can quit this is not that surprising.

This is becoming more and more common. Many of the larger hospital systems in Houston don't hire tobacco users. It's justified as setting a good example for patients and reducing cancer rates in the community by eliminating more second hand smoke. It also lowers health insurance rates.

Other industries are beginning to charge tobacco-using employees higher health insurance premiums.

Update on Houston hospitals: MD Anderson Cancer Center (19k+ employees), Memorial Hermann Healthcare (21k+ employees) and Houston Methodist (17k+ employees) all have tobacco-free hiring policies.
