It seems like some people, because of their looks and personality, just sail into good jobs and promotions. It effortless for them. They have "it." Sometimes I feel like it's pointless to try to be successful because I'm up against too many people who will always have the upper hand. No amount of interview practice or resume formatting can change this. My place on the societal totem pole is as a median-income work drone, at best.

Maybe time to try the Psychology forum.

Yep, you got it exactly right. I got where I am today because of my looks and personality. My work ethic, knowledge, experience and documented business success had nothing at all to do with where I am in my career.
In "some" jobs and industries, "looks and personality" will get you very far. In others, which require industry knowledge, "looks and personality" may only get you an initial interview. You'll be weeded out after the initial interview, because of the lack of industry or domain knowledge.
Don't take such a black and white view of the world, there is a place for you to fit in and find a career, you just have to find it.

I can guarantee you that it was neither my looks nor my personality that got me where I am today. It was patience, effort, and gaining the experience to work my way up over many years.
Most successful people are average looking and pretty boring - that's *not* a thing you can hide behind and feel sorry for yourself about.
