not sure what you mean by "proper", but besides babysitting and paper route (both starting at age 12), my first office job was after school at the newspaper, helping out with clerical work. I started this at 13.
I've worked ever since.....
I am positive that I had no problem getting a job with a Liberal Arts degree because I had a full resume when I graduated. For entry level positions, most companies do not require specific experience in that field, but all want you to show some work experience. They want to make sure you can hold a job, show up on time, and have a god work ethic.
got my first proper job about 3 months ago at a supermarket , just wondering what everyones first job was?
My actual first job (excluding paper routes) was as a busboy in a restaurant. But since my mother was the manager, I don't count that as my first real, on-my-own job. That was also in a supermarket, and eventually became my first full-time job as well.
My first paid job was a clerk in Citibank credit department (not located in US) during summer break.
I was a super cheap labor back then and it lasted 2.5 months till I went back to school.
My first job was busboy in a restaurant during the college. With tips, I was making around $15 per hour which was a decent salary for me My first out of college job was an internship program which led me a great career. I was still making $15 per hour as an intern and was feeling pretty bad but everything changed in 6 months.
Ran a little ''mom and pop'' bakery at age 15. Washed all the overnight baker's pots and pans, cleaned the kitchen, and sold the day's baked goods out front. Counted the cash and took it to the bank. Just me, summer vacation.
1.25/hour a LONG time ago!

At age 14, I got a job peeling potatoes and clearing tables at a local Fish & Chip shop for $1.75/hour, back in 1966. I stayed there and worked my way up to "head fry-cook" until my 2nd year in college when I moved closer to school
and took a job at a liquor store.
I did the same paper route and lawn mowing that other posters did, but my first on the books job was working as a gopher for an electrician at 16 years of age. It paid $5/ hour when min-wage was $4.25, plus he bought lunch every day.
I had to buy my own tools though. I still have most of them.
