A company that I interviewed for told me the position required 50% travel in the interview. This was not mentioned in the job description or the phone screen. I'm wondering if this was done on purpose to get more people to apply or if they just really thought it was okay to leave that out until you got to the interview. Anyone experienced this before? I think it's really inconsiderate as I would have never applied.

I doubt they deliberately mislead you, since for every person who hears about the travel and thinks 'eeww! No way!' there is going to be someone who responds with 'hooray! What an exciting chance to travel the country/world!'

It sucks that they neglected to mention that important piece of information, though! They wasted your time and theirs, since by offering incomplete info they are self-selecting for group 1 ('eeww!') when they should be focused on group 2 ('hooray!')

I've had a couple, although it would be a few months after starting those jobs where I learned otherwise:
1) I got a job where this one person made it miserable for the rest of us. Obviously, not something they would share in an interview nor point out. I ended up getting let go due to that. I dealt with it poorly, and not sure how I would've figured this out in an interview Live and learn.
2) a position I relocated for ended up only lasting 6.5 months. They told me it would be at least a 1 year contract. All of my coworkers I talked with said they were also told 1 year.

In your case, if they give you an offer, confirm the situation with the travel. If it still stands and it's not what you're looking for, be prepared to decline. I'd say try to negotiate a better situation with the travel, but it seems like they may have lost your trust, so it won't matter what they say at this point.

Without seeing the job description and knowing what job is of issue it would be difficult to know if the candidate needed to informed there was significant travel versus should have known that there would be significant travel.

There's only so much info they put in an ad or give you before the interview. The interview is the time to ask questions and find out more. Yeah its kind of annoying you probably would have passed up the interview otherwise but not out of line on their part.

From my experience a position requiring a significant amount of travel is usually made clear in the job ad. However perhaps they consider 50% travel not to be significant.

It's a badly written ad, is all. Why would they want to waste their time with a bunch of applicants who can't travel? It costs time and money to do interviews so there is very little reason to bring in a pack of people who can't possibly do the job.

They really should mention that in the job description. Some people enjoy it, some hate it. It's a time waster to not include it in the ad.
