I leave at 4pm. I do 40 hours most weeks. Sometimes I log in during the evenings or on weekends just to monitor things but I usually don't actively work overtime.
My work always gets done on time, unless factors beyond my control are at work (and I fully document those cases).
Every once in a while, code I wrote goes haywire in production but so far that has always been due to the production support people doing something they shouldn't have.
I start packing up my stuff and cleaning up my desk about 4:50. I am sure corporate would rather me do that at 5:00 but they don't pay enough for that! lol
I am salary and work the same hours typically as the hourly (50) however lately they've been working Saturdays and I take it off. If I do come in I get a bit of extra pay but it's small in comparison.
Well I get off at 5PM but usually don't actually get out the door until 5:30 or 6 because there's always someone who wants to talk about one more thing, or I have one more thing to do before I leave.
I found about $50k to be the salary point where you didn't get to leave when the clock struck 5. Hourly always leaves on time because otherwise it's overtime. Lower entry level type positions, data entry, administrative assistants, etc. type jobs also let you go at 5.
Once the pay goes up, the hours tend to be 9-"whenever you get it done"
On the plus side though, 9 does start to turn to ~9 without people giving you a hard time. But that's usually because you're making up for it on the other end of the day.
Yep, this is a very true statement. In the 40-60K time entry level, associate, type positions they work standard hours and can leave at the same time every day. 40 hour weeks on the dot.
Once you get to Manager, Sr. Manager, Director level positions its "until the job is done". You start getting meetings and conference calls scheduled early/late in the day, you get the company cellphone/laptop, expected to check email in the evenings, etc.
I make a lot more money but I also am effectively working 50-60 (sometimes 70-80) hours per week.

At my employer, the expectation is for a 45 hour work week, minimum, of all employees. There is an "associate" level engineer who works on site with me that generally works eleven hours per day M-F, 8A-12P Saturdays (with occasional full days), and weekend nights to meet client demands. About all he has off consistently are Sunday mornings and afternoons. Needless to say, he is looking for other employment.
I get in close to 8 and leave around 4:20 maybe earlier if I feel like it. They don't precisely monitor your time but I try to be honest as possible, though most times I leave after 7 hours 45 minutes, nobody notices.
I work 4- 10s with Fridays off. That's the greatest schedule ever for a junior engineer.
