it may take 5-7 days to get over it, but obviously can't take off that much. How do you deal with it, especially if you have a customer service job?
If a person is contagious they should not be at work; and too, it's not good for one's health to return to work too soon.
However, there are too many employers who will threaten the employee with termination if they don't get back to work. And there are too many employees who can't afford to take time off and lose pay.
If an employee has to return to work too soon, best that they do all they can to avoid being too close to other employees. Had one coworker who couldn't wait to tell us that she had a cold or the flu and then would practically stand right in our faces when talking to us!

There are places that give occurrence points if you are out for any reason, including illness. One place I worked such as this, if you got five occurrence points per year you were fired. "We need you here all day, every day" was stated on their attendance memo.
One staff member actually came to work the day after hernia surgery. To say he was in discomfort was an understatement.
I now work as a cook in a school cafeteria. If you are sick, they don't want you handling food, and they don't want you at work!

For me when I get a cold, I get a full blown "man cold", where I am miserable for days at a time. Last time I got a nasty cold from the cadets at my old job I just sucked it up and went to work sick. People kept asking me why I didn't just take time off. Now I really wish I would have just taken sick days. I get this mentality from my dad that you have to be a trooper, suck it and go to work and do the best you can no matter how sick you may be.
Also, do you folks who work sick realize that you're a hazard to everyone around you, spreading your germs? What about immunocompromised people? You're putting them at risk.
Working sick is a rather selfish thing to do, honestly. And I say this as a woman who makes $18k a year--whatever you lose from staying home can't be so much that you end up making less than I do.
Colds are not generally considered life threatening. Even with schools and day cares, kids are allowed to go with a cold. I generally follow the same rules for myself. 24 hours fever free, a fever being 101 or higher.

I once had a coworker who gave me crap about coming to work with a cold. However, if I was out she would never help with the work and ***** about having to do so. I pointed that out to her and she shut up.
What are these meds that you all take for a cold? As far as I know, there isn't any med that can fix a cold...
