OP, good or bad karma is created by you and yourself only. There's no need to mention the do's and the don'ts in life but for what its worth, it's money. You can make money later, and more of it come your way if you do the right thing. Remember the logic behind a prudent woman/man. Even if you foresee yourself being let go, the bonus mistake is the mistake of someone who will also have consequences. You can help ease the trouble of "that someone" by NOT cashing it and return it back to the company in whatever form you find feasible. There's a reason why there are tons of quotes for this type of behavior in life.

Honesty is the #1 in a human's integrity.

If the OP notified HR and they decided to do nothing about it. No please wait while we investigate sort of reply. Then what should they wait on. Is the CEO supposed to validate the bonus in front of his grandmother, first born and a notary,in order to satisfy cashing? All the information was correct on the.check, the only thing questioned was not being notified of the bonus. If I notified HR that one was received and heard nothing from them I would cash it.

If you question luck too much, you may talk your way out it of it.... A good thing is often made bad by insisting it couldn't possibly be anything other.....
And a quick review of cases online would show that you would be promptly wearing an orange jump suit for a few years. Personal ethics aside, the courts have already ruled that this is theft. Grand Theft in the OP's case, which is more than just a few years.

I would certainly thank them for the check and let them know how much help it will be while you are looking for new opportunities. I would not spend it though. Just see how they handle it.

So in your mind, it's morally acceptable to steal from a company, but not steal from a person. You actually see a distinction.

That's nothing more but a poor attempt to try and justify keeping something that doesn't belong to you. The law doesn't see it that way.

And don't tell law-abiding, ethical people to get off of their moral high horses. Most of us don't want to join the gutter dwellers who think this is okay.

I'll always put myself before a company .
I will stay on my high horse, out of the gutter full of poop, because it is the right thing to do. At least I won't stink.

The op did his job and notified the company, it is now up to the company to respond. If they don't keep it and he would have proof in court that he attempted to contact. No need in giving back money when it maybe yours anyway.

I agree with most of this -- just not cashing it right away. I'd hold on for a couple years before spending it.

Many of the posters are being harsh and judgemental. They're making an assumption that just because he's not sure what it's for means that there's no way it's his, and then they're attacking those who don't agree with them.

He already contacted HR. He should probably contact them/payroll again, but what if he still gets no response? Yes, they could still take it back and that's why I recommend holding on to it for a few years and not spending it. But if he makes multiple attempts to see where it's from/return it and gets no response (keep a trail!!), there's no way anyone can say what he's doing is illegal.

It is always best to do the right thing becasue it is the right thing to do.

Have you ever received a bonus check before from this company?
Was a bonus part of your contract?
Was there a company announcement that bonuses would be issued?
Have you already cashed and spent the check?

Are you looking for validation from this forum or are you seriously conflicted about what to do?
