In high school I worked for my father doing construction. Later on I took a job working at McDonalds, and then at an auto part store in between working for my dad. I'm 33.... been working since I was 12 years old.
In high school I worked at McDonalds mostly. After high school, I didn't go to college right away and worked at a bunch of places for minimum wage. When I finally decided to go to college, I went to a Community College and worked in their student resource center tutoring other students (mostly in math). When I went to a 4-year college/university, I had a couple of work-study positions, I worked at a grocery store and Walmart, I worked at a kennel.
I was never able to get any experience with my degree before graduating and I thought that would hurt my chances, but I got lucky and was able to get a job in my field right before graduation.

I worked the first two years of college as a fry-cook, then the last two and graduate school 40+ hours a week in a liquor store. My first job after college was in customer service at a utility and surprisingly the experience helped, then thanks in large part to the degree, I had 5 promotions over the next 17 years.
I worked at UPS, part-time (20 hours a week) at night. It was a tough place to work, but I earned enough $, to help pay bills. After a stint at UPS, I got offered a part-time position at a bank data center (doing part-time technical support, working evenings) which paid a lot better. I learned about IT and networking this way, which started my career. It was the best break of my life.
