If I were you I'd make sure your current company is ok with this. I have an offer at a new consulting firm. They want me to completley give up my side work and bring in those people as clients. They do not view any of my outside work as okay, they want to be my only job. I am measuring if I am okay with this before i take it.....but I just thought I would throw that out there. Your current employer may frown upon this arrangement big time, and you could end up in a worse situation. I keep hearing the phrase from my new company (if I take it) that "they want to make sure they are getting my best" I can assure them that my outside work is automated and easy for me....but they dont buy it.

I think you are a little bit underpaid as well. You seem like a nice guy who is trying to do the right thing....and maybe people are taking advantage of that? Unfortunatley, sometimes in life...a raise never comes until you are willing to leave. They may think they have you right where they want you, why pay you more?

It is hard to live in limbo (I know that better than anyone else) but I think you need to keep your eyes open for a better job opportunity. And once your current employers start getting calls from other employers about your references....then you will find out how much they are willing to pay to keep you. If they are not, well then by all means find another job, you don't need to deal with a dead end.

Thanks! My g/f had a similar problem with a previous position of hers before too, where they didn't want her to have any other job. My 2nd job knows that I have a different day job, and they're fine with it. My 1st job doesn't really know about the second one, but actually, my productivity has actually gone up at my 1st job (I'm able to satisfy my web browsing habit at the 2nd job).

I also agree that I'm underpaid... :-( I figured I needed to build at least a couple of years experience before other, more lucrative, positions would open up with other companies. So ya, I'm always keeping my eyes out for the next position elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the 1st job doesn't play salary games. We've had a fair bit of turnover lately due to a business merger, the benefits shrinking and a new CIO. They've already said in departmental meetings, when asked if they'd be willing to negotiate salary if people continue to leave. Their logic was that if people have started looking elsewhere, they've already decided in their minds they don't want to be there. So searching for a new 1st job it is :-p
