Yep lets emulate a country where they have had riots in the streets due to lack of jobs and where corporations have moved to other countries due to high costs of doing business. Just what we need another reason for the corporations to screw all of us.
There are many other countries that are doing well that don't expect workers to work the hours that are expected in the US.
I'd be looking for another job if I had to work 60+ the first week. If that's how they treat you early on, it will probably be the norm if not worse.
why are we still working 40 hour work weeks? the advancement in technology should have dropped that to 30 by now. why cant we be like the french in this one area?
What in the world are you talking about? If you want to work 30 hours a week.... have at it!
My first job was 100+ hours a week, so 60 would have been fine with me, and that was a 4 year gig. 60 would have been like a vacation. Even now, 60 is a light week for me.

Personally, i'd much rather have us deal with a "people are overworked" type of a problem. It's a problem for sure, but i'd consider it a positive one, when the alternatives are taken into account.
Instead of the one we have here now, many people having their hours cut, armies of reluctant part-timers.. and still hundreds of thousands of people in their prime working age, out of a 6 million populace, out of work with no relief in sight. Meanwhile, an increasing number of self-employed and small business owners put in 100 hours per week.. they can't necessarily afford the burden of hiring an employee. And when i say "afford", it has little to do with the actual wages they'd have to pay.

Sadly, this is standard for the role, and as more business comes in, there is no sign of it abating.
You never said if they got time and a half or more? Money is a big incentive to work longer hours - especially if you have debt. Maybe they were misled; but if it is paying the bills why complain. As long as there is a monetary incentive; sooner or later the company will try to cut cost and reduce the hours.
We recently had a new person start at my office in another department. This position has recently staffed up from two to five, but the hours are still demanding. He said he worked 64 hours his first week! Needless to say, he feels like he was misled coming into the job.
How would you feel working that many hours in the first week knowing it's going to continue with no end in sight?
If you work in IT, why are you not trying to automate old time-killers?
