Many years ago I had a friend who was a set painter. She also did wall paper, hung curtains on fake windows, all sorts of stuff. She really loved it. The biggest down fall is that she works 20 hour days for a few weeks at a time, and then might only work 10 hours a week for the next few weeks. It was really feast or famine.

She did a lot of community theater type stuff in a medium sized city. If you get onto the union on Broadway or work for a company like Disney, the work will be more steady.
