Why are people so afraid of their employer knowing? What are they going to do? Fire you? You get unemployment then, from a job you would have left on your own eventually. They can't treat you worse, it's against the laws to "harass" someone like that as well.

But how is it so common that people on here keep referring themselves as one of the "final" candidates? The government is not suppose to provide any more contact after the interview until a final decision is made, either a yes or a no. Not a you're still in the running so consider yourself a "finalist".
I don't remember the exact phrase he used, but about a week after the interview my husband was called and told that a decision was made, and once it was officially approved by the workforce management division they would contact the people who were given interviews with the final yes/no decision. We've been told by other NWS hiring managers in the past that typically less than 100 people are referred, and less than 10 people get interviews, so I might have just extrapolated the "finalist". But we've definitely been contacted after interview before decision by multiple lead meteorologists with the NWS.

Job transitions are always a little bumpy. Not much you can do but remain professional and get through the awkwardness. Good luck to your husband!

Ask yourself...

Would they give him ample notice if they were firing him, or laying him off?

No, they would send him home that day.

Same thing applies on this one.
