This is another general question I'd like to see what others think.
In my division, we haven't had any new managers since I started, but it appears most, if not at all, the management came from the outside and were hired into a management role immediately. It doesn't appear the current managers were promoted from within from a nonmanagement role. I have seen at least one manager go back into a technical role.
Does your firm promote most managers from within or bring them in from the outside?
Pretty much all are promoted from within, one way or another.
Could be that they worked for a company client for years, performing contract work for our company, and were eventually hired in management by our company, or they've just been here for a long time.
Either way, all management here seem to have pretty lengthy history with the company, be it from outside or inside.

Lower level supervisors are mostly from within, managers can go either way. Directors have been promoted from within while the same CEO is in place for several years, but when a new one comes in they like to bring in people from the outside.
Mostly from outside. With a good bit of turnover so we're always have to train someone on what we do, and so we're always getting "helped" by the new "hero" who has come in from outside to save us. You know the type -- has no clue what you do, but knows you are doing it wrong and will implement a new plan that fixes everything. For a year or two until he leaves and gets replaced by the next hero who tells you that plan was all wrong, but don't worry, he's here to save you.
