True- we've always had separate checks except w/birthday lunches. I could see how that could be a huge problem for some. It's a choice...
So all this time where you've stated she's not being left out of the birthday celebrations and could easily choose to buy an appetizer, you left out the part where everyone just splits the check until you were asked that direct question.

OK, now I understand what her complaint is. I agree with her and wouldn't like this either. She doesn't want to subsidize someone's expensive entree, dessert and drinks. Makes total sense. Why not have everyone pay for their own lunch and split the cost of the birthday person's check?

I'd have to agree here as well.
If every Bday lunch was a evenly split bill, i'd lose distaste for it as well. I try to eat healthy so my lunch tends to be light.
Nothing sucks more than subsidizing a coworkers lunch because they got a $40 meal with apps and you got a $7 salad and water.
"Bill's $47 plus a tip. We'll leave $58 so you owe me $28 please."

Sometimes the truth ain't pretty so we just gloss over that.
Just out of curiousity.....what sort of places are you going to eat? Would would a typical mean run a single person?
$15 or so? Or $30-40?
Depends... I went to Outback this year for my b-day. My bill was around $10 split among 12. It can range so there's no way to tell what the typical would be. Lot's of varying tastes in the group.
