A quick background: I recently finished my MPA. I already work for a local government agency but just received a job offer for another department within the same local government agency.
Current job: I have been working at this job for 7 months making 45k. It is part of a year-long training program. When I finish the training in 5 months I'll get a $3,000 raise. I am comfortable and good at my job and well liked in the office. The job is in a nice suburban office park and only a 20-25 minute commute. The major cons are that the organizational structure is flat and it is difficult to promote. It also does not employ my MPA skills (I am a worker bee and will be so for years). Also, 7 months of training will be wasted.
New job: Will start at 53k. Has a built in promotion to 60k. Appears to require MPA skills. The major con is that it is an hour commute (which will be reduced to 40-45 minutes when I move in September). It is also in a large downtown office building and has all the hassles that come along with that (parking in a far away parking structure, elevators, etc).
What would you do? Can someone talk some sense into me?
So the new job pays 10% better, has a built-in promotion path, and it's in the field you're getting your post-grad in.
The trade-off is that your commute time will increase to about an hour or so?

Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
So don't take it? Kidding.
Also, I can't move right next to the new job since I have my GF's work location to consider. Once we move it will be halfway between our jobs.
ask yourself "is this a should or a want to"
and go with the want to
and stay away from the should (as in "don't should on me")
picture yourself at each of the two jobs....and how does it feel. Does your energy level go up...or down.
quality of life and happiness (your happiness, your quality of life, not any of us here on line)
is how you make the decision
not just money, not just what will impress others, it is your particular individual recipe for you
