Matt Debenham said I can’t make a living as an adjunct professor, so I got a job at a grocery store in my town.
The day in January I brought my job application back to the grocery store, I assumed I’d just be dropping it off, but the manager, Scott, wanted to look it over with me standing right there. He read through my work experience on the front. I hadn’t worked retail since college, but I’d had management experience in the private sector. Then he turned the paper over and I watched his eyes move across the hours available section.
Adjunct's make terrible money. They are hired to teach 1-2 classes that the faculty or graduate students can't teach. Most people who are adjunct's also have day jobs. Not sure why this is a story. The guy quit his job to become an adjunct and then was surprised at how little it paid......then was surprised he wasn't handed the job at a grocery store because he is an adjunct at a university? Sounds like an Academic to me.
Practically all these people who end up as adjuncts with PhDs were mostly likely told by their professors while in grad school (or even by other adjuncts in undergrad) not to go the down the route in academia as a career. The writing has been on the wall for a long time (decades) that the tenured positions have been disappearing from higher education.

And, unless I missed it, there is nothing to indicate he is a PhD. Since he is teaching MFA classes, I'm guessing he has an MFA or some type of graduate degree.

That's what I was thinking as well. There are many times and reasons why people with MSs can teach as an adjunct. My boss only has his MA and he teaches as an adjunct in the evenings. It's easier to get an adjunct role as a PhD, but they will take MA/MS/MFAs if the situation is right.
An adjunct isn't a full time job and never has been.
Exactly. Most have a day job.
