The national budget covers government paychecks before anything else, including currency. Thus, a government job has great backing... especially the military. Imagine working for a boss that people could be arrested for disrespecting, retirement after 20 years, real equal rights for race and gender, world travel, superior firepower, and an unlimited budget.

Electrical Utility worker. Our economy and society hum along thanks in large part to the electricity that flows to homes and businesses. You can't "offshore" these jobs, they need to maintain existing and install new facilities in every corner of the country. No matter what source of power plant provides the electricity (nuke, coal, wind, solar, hydro, gas, oil or whatever else is used in the future) you will still need someone to work on the distribution and local power grids.

Real estate appraisers.... When homes are foreclosed on three different appraisers have to appraise it (at least in my neck of the woods.)

Our company always hired sales people during a recession and may cut other jobs within the company.

Recession-Proof Jobs in 2008 shows :

* Education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has historically shown teaching to be relatively recessioon proof But demographics are important: High-growth areas like the Sun Belt offer much better prospects than the Rust Belt.
* Energy. "This is a major issue for the global economy, and jobs related to oil and gas, alternative energy and even nuclear are likely to see strong growth," Challenger said.
* Health care. Almost half the 30 fastest growing occupations are concentrated in health services -- including medical assistants, physical therapists, physician assistants, home health aides, and medical records and health information technicians -- according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
* International business. "If you have a strong knowledge of other cultures, and an ability to work in another country, you'll find plenty of opportunities," according to John Challenger. "If you're first generation Chinese, with business skills and Chinese language skills, you're in good shape.
* Environmental sector. There is a huge and growing industry geared to combat global warming. "Not only will professionals with skills in sustainability issues be in demand through the end of the decade, we are likely to shortages of professionals with 'green' skills," said Rona Fried, president of sustainablebusiness.com, a networking service for sustainable businesses.
* Security. "Crime doesn't stop during a recession, and police officers, port security specialists and international security experts will continue to be in demand,"

Web Design Professionals For many organizations, the Internet is the primary channel for communicating with customers and building brand identity. As a result, Web design professionals are in high demand. For example, website designers can expect starting compensation of $46,500 to $68,500 per year in 2008. The most in-demand applicants can leverage print and Web design expertise to create cohesive, compelling marketing campaigns. Consequently, Web designers who possess a thorough understanding of front-end development, and expertise in applications such as HTML, Cascading Style Sheets and Flash ActionScripting, will command the highest salaries.

I saw on the news the other day that car mechanics are doing great. People want to keep the old clunkers going another year, not buy new.
So, that's a good job to have right now!

I would say in general, government jobs at any level would be safe, at least compared to private sector for sure.

It's a darn good thing my wife works in gov't or we'd be out in the street right now!

Nope, administrator is NOT a recession proof job. Take it from me, I worked in Admin for 2 years before I was laid off. However, if the Admin job is in a school district or a city, or county job, then yes it is recession proof to a point.
