Do you work 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift - and which shift do you prefer to work if you had the opportunity?

Right now my job has variable schedules, meaning I might work 1st shift one day, 2nd shift the next, or some hybrid of the two. I hate it. It doesn't allow you to have any rhythm or routine for any of your daily habits, like eating or sleeping. I function best as a night owl, but I hate working 2nd shift. I'd rather invest my most productive hours into my personal life rather than my job. And I would never work 3rd shift. I've turned down jobs that expected you to take turns on 3rd. I've done that at my current job a few times and it just destroys you for days afterward, because 3rd shift is even worse when you're not used to it..

I work 2nd at the moment. I'm on the fence about preference. 1st is nice, but 2nd shift with a premium can be just as good. I like being able to do my shopping and running around when everyone else is at work. 2nd shift is also quite lax and laid back. Very low stress. If I had less experience, it would probably be the opposite though.

I will only work a 9 to 5 job and will never work any other job that is not 9 to 5 ( technically meaning 630 to 3 7 to 330 730 to 4pm) you get the point
REFUSE TO WORK ANOTHER SHIFT

Except for a few people in the maintenance department, we only have one shift, but with varied start times. I work the hours I prefer, 6:30am-3pm, allowing me to avoid the worst traffic and be home in time to do things in the afternoon/evening.

We only have one shift in my department and we have global coverage so I doubt any US teams do true shift work. I worked some variant of second shift (3:30P-2:00A, 6:00P-2:30A, 2P-10:30P) for several years and though I hated the job, I loved the schedule. It was so nice being able to get everything in public done during the workweek when everyone else was working and I seemed to have far more free time than I do working days.
