So here's the deal. Over a month ago now I asked my boss for a promotion for a job with the same company (I'd have a different boss then). She said that I was qualified and she'd recommend me. We've talked about it a little since then, but pretty much...nothing. She mentioned the position might have been filled, but there are other positions with the same title in the company. So yesterday I applied to those as well to have my bases covered. I heard my boss is probably going to get fired, but think I'm still qualified and have put in more than enough work to justify the promotion. So what should I do now? Should I call HR about it? Should I wait before doing so? If so then for how long?

You applied yesterday, it's way too soon to be following up. As for the original promotion, if your boss is going to be fired, I'd keep quiet and avoid being "spoiled by a rotten apple".
Just wanted to update about my situation in case others have been in similar. Well, my boss ended up getting fired. On top of that I found out she lied to me and never spoke to the people she was supposed to in order to recommend me. I sent an e-mail to the guy who is covering for her while they look for someone permanent. He got back to me the same day and now I have an interview for the job on Friday.
