I parked overnight in a car lot that my friend said was free. Foolishly I trusted this person and parked, surely enough when I awoke and walked to my car I found a simple parking ticket.

Or not so simple...

On the back of the parking ticket it says that parking infractions are considered fourth degree misdemeanors in city/state.

My question is, could this hurt my chances of future employment?!

I've never gotten one criminal charge or have been arrested in my life. Now all of the sudden just for parking in the wrong spot I received this ticket.

I paid the $25.00 fine on time and forgot about it, but it lingers in my mind.

What if I filled out an application of employment? Do I now have to check "Yes I am guilty of a misdemeanor." and when they run my background check will the offense show up as a HUGE CRIME.

Once again I am really nervous/scared. I just don't see how a parking ticket could be a fourth degree misdemeanor, what would HR or an employer think if I told them this information?

Sigh....

It really depends on the application.

Some only ask for felonies...
Some ask if you have been convicted, or sentenced or put on probation.
...Which means if it was a ticket (parking, speeding, public disturbance, etc) that was resolved with a fine.. then it does not fall under these terms.

If it states a more broader description (if you've ever been cited) ... then yes, it would be best to disclose this.

But honestly...
I HIGHLY doubt any employer would hold it against you if put that you had an overnight parking ticket
(In fact some that review it may find it funny)

I've been in charge of hiring in the past.. and I would not hold illegal parking against someone (unless it was habitual.)

Do applications even ask about misdemeanors? I thought they usually ask about felonies.

It's a parking ticket, don't worry about it.

I don't know much about the field, but it's only a parking ticket. I really can't see any reason why this would be a problem for future jobs. In no way is this a judgement on your character.

I don't think employers care how many parking tickets you get. Mod cut.

A parking ticket is not going to hurt your future employment prospects. If there is anyone that rigid where they agree this should be considered a crime they need their heads examined.

It's probably only a fourth degree misdemeanor if you do not pay the ticket. Parking violations are not the same as moving (driving) violations.

As long as you paid the ticket within the required time period, I would not worry about it, or mention it on any application.

Most places either only ask about felonies or specificaly exclude traffic violations.

I never heard of that. If you paid the ticket, you are probably fine. When I first moved here I got a red light camera ticket. Some a$$hat pulled out into the intersection to turn left and then stopped for no reason. Dummy me was behind this jerk and wanted to turn left also. While he was sitting there doing nothing, the light turned red and I got a ticket. It cost me $150, but didn't hurt my chances of getting hired.
